Now let's take a look at the YouTube Activity settings. For the purpose of this article we will use the Google I/O YouTube video Playlist.

Settings

Activity Name
The name that you want to give to your activity. This will appear on the dashboard, toolbar, and navigation drawer. This can be whatever you want but should probably describe the items that you will be displaying. For our example we'll use "Android I/O"

Subtitle
A few words describing this activity. This subtitle text may be displayed on the dashboard if the dashboard's item style supports it.

Description
A longer paragraph describing this activity. This description text may be displayed on the dashboard if the dashboard's item style supports it.

Position
This is a relative index that controls the order of the activities in your application. The position will effect where your activity is displayed on the dashboard and navigation drawer. For more information on this setting please read: How to change the order of the icons on the dashboard

Build this activity (include it in the app)
Whether or not this activity will be included in the app. This may be useful if you're creating different versions of your app that you want to contain different content.

Hide this activity (don't list it on any dashboards or navigation drawer)
When selected, this activity won't show on the dashboard or the navigation drawer. You can still access this activity from an HTML-based activity using it's Activity URL. For more information, refer to the section HTML Archive Activity in wich you will find the topic Linking to Another Activity.

Theme

Images

The Images section allows you to provide the images to show on the activity and those that will be used to represent it on it's parent dashboard and navigation drawer. See the Activity Images topic for descriptions of these settings.

Each item will contain a title, date the item was published, a short description, and a video thumbnail (the specific elements shown will depend on what Item Style you select):

The Website activity is used to display the contents of a website in your application. It is one of the simplest activities, yet it's ability to display web content makes it very powerful.

Adding a Website Activity

To add a Website activity to your project: start editing your project and go to the Activities tab. Under 'Your App Activities' click the + Add an Activity button and select Website from the list.

Now let's take a look at the Website Activity settings. For the purpose of this article we will use the Andromo blog.

Settings

The Website activity contains the following settings.

Activity Name
The name that you want to give your activity. This will appear on the dashboard, toolbar, and navigation drawer. This can be whatever you want but should probably describe the website that you will be displaying. For our example, we'll use "Andromo Blog"

For more information on this setting please read: How to change the order of the icons on the dashboard.

For more information, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

Theme

The Theme setting allows you to inherit theme settings from the global theme, parent theme, or override the theme settings for the activity. See the Activity Theme topic for descriptions of these settings.

Images

The Images section allows you to provide the images to show on the activity and those that will be used to represent it on it's parent dashboard and navigation drawer. See the Activity Images topic for descriptions of these settings.

Toolbar

The Toolbar setting allows you to inherit the toolbar settings from the global toolbar, parent toolbar, or override the toolbar settings for the activity. See the Activity Toolbar topic for descriptions of these settings.

Details

Website URL
The website that will be displayed within your application. It must be a complete URL like: http://www.andromo.com or http://blog.andromo.com

Orientation
This setting allows you to force the activity to stay in a particular orientation. Leave this on 'Automatic' unless you absolutely need to lock the display orientation for some reason (like games etc.).

Automatic - Switch orientations automatically (the normal behavior).

Landscape - Lock this activity in landscape orientation.

Portrait - Lock this activity in portrait orientation.

Banner ads

This controls which banner ad networks will be permitted on this activity when banner ads are enabled for the app.

You can choose whether to permit all ads, all ads except Google AdMob ads, or to prevent any ads from appearing in this activity at all.

Google does not permit AdMob ads to be shown alongside web content containing Google AdSense ads. Refer to the AdMob terms of use and content guidelines for details.

Enable Geolocation permissions
You can enable this option if the website needs access to HTML5 Geolocation features. When this feature is enabled, the appropriate permissions will be added to the app requesting access to their location.

Enable Zoom
You can enable this to allow zooming in or out using on-screen zoom controls and gestures. Generally you should only disable this if your website is mobile friendly.

Open website in external browser
You can enable this to open the website outside of the app, within the default browser.

Activity URL

The unique reference URL for this activity that can be used for linking to it. For an example of it's usage, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

What the Website Activity Contains

The Website activity is made up of one activity that displays the contents of the Website URL set in your activity settings.

Linking to Another Activity

The Website activity also allows you to open another activity from a link using the special URL format:

andromo://<<internal-activity-identifier>>

Each activity contains an internal unique identifier that can be referenced for opening it. You can find each activity's reference URL in the section labeled "Activity URL" located below the activity's Example Screenshot. Each activity's settings can be accessed from the "Activities" tab, by clicking the desired activity name or icon, or by selecting "Edit" from its Action drop-down list. It will appear as a value such as:

where "website801769" is the internal identifier for that particular activity. This value will be different for each activity in your project.

As an HTML hyperlink, this would be formatted as:

<a href="andromo://website801769">Visit Our Website</a>

If you'd like to open the dashboard, you can specify the following:

andromo://dashboard

As an HTML hyperlink, this would be formatted as:

<a href="andromo://dashboard">Go Home</a>

Position
A relative index that controls the order of the activities in your application. The position affects where your activity is displayed on the dashboard and navigation drawer. You can use any value you want; all that matters is how the value compares to the position indexes of other activities.

For more information on this setting please read: How to change the order of the icons on the dashboard.

Details

Radio Type
The type of radio URL you're connecting to. Choose from the following three options:

Playlist - an .m3u, .pls, or .asx file containing links to individual audio tracks

SHOUTcast Playlist - an .m3u, .pls, or .asx file containing links to SHOUTcast/Icecast server streams

SHOUTcast Stream - a direct link to a SHOUTcast/Icecast server stream

Choosing Playlist or SHOUTcast Playlist will make the app treat the URL as a playlist file. It will attempt to download the file at that URL and parse it in order to expand it into individual tracks.

Choosing SHOUTcast Playlist or SHOUTcast Stream will make the app treat the URL as a SHOUTcast or Icecast server. It will connect to the server every 30 to 60 seconds in order to retrieve metadata about the radio channel and the current song. If successful, this information will be shown above the media controls at the bottom of the screen:

Note: not all SHOUTcast servers provide this information. If your channel doesn't transmit the song titles, you may want to switch to the Playlist setting so your app doesn't use any bandwidth attempting to retrieve the metadata.

URL
The URL of your playlist or SHOUTcast stream. Make sure you choose the appropriate Radio Type for the file this URL points to.

For example, http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=21585 is the URL to a SHOUTcast playlist file.

Enable sharing
This checkbox controls whether or not the share icon/menu item will be shown on the activity's toolbar and context menu.

Autoplay first track
Automatically start playing the first track after opening this activity.

Activity URL

The unique reference URL for this activity that can be used for linking to it. For an example of it's usage, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

What if I don't have any feeds?

Chances are you have more feeds that you think you do. If you have an online presence; produce or consume online content you are probably creating a feed or accessing sites that are producing feeds. If you have a twitter account, write a blog, post photos online, use google+, participate in a forum or online community, you are probably creating a feed. The trick is to discover where those feeds are and which feeds should be in your application.

Adding an RSS Feed Activity

To add an RSS Feed activity to your project: start editing your project and go to the Activities tab. Under 'Your App Activities' click the + Add an Activity button and select RSS Feed from the list.

Now let's take a look at the RSS Feed Activity settings. For the purpose of this article we will use the andromo blog's atom feed [http://blog.andromo.com/feed/atom/]

Settings

Activity Name
The name that you want to give your activity. This will appear on the dashboard, toolbar, and navigation drawer. This can be whatever you want but should probably describe the feed that you will be displaying. For our example we'll use "Andromo Blog"

For more information on this setting please read: How to change the order of the icons on the dashboard.

Build this activity (include it in the app)
Whether or not this activity will be included in the app. This may be useful if you're creating different versions of your app that you want to contain different content.

Hide this activity (don't list it on any dashboards or navigation drawer)

Details

RSS/Atom Feed URL
This is the URL of the feed that you would like to display. For example, we'll use: http://blog.andromo.com/feed/atom/

Tip: You can use the Feed Validator to test if a particular feed is valid.

RSS Activity Type
There are two activity types available for the RSS activity, Classic RSS Feed, or Photo Feed. Each have their own settings as described below.

Classic RSS Feed
Useful for text-based feeds. By default each feed item is displayed as a row in a list of feed items on the index activity. Each list item will contain a thumbnail (if available), title, description and the date the post was made. You can control the interface style and what content is shown by selecting a different Item Style.

Item Style
The item style you want to use for the index page of the RSS content. Choose from styles such as cards, grids, and lists including which content you want to show.

When items are no longer in the feed
These settings control how to handle items that are no longer in the current feed data.

Cache them - Cache the items so they continue to show in the list.

Hide them - Hide the items that are no longer in the feed.

Remove them - Remove the items that are no longer in the feed.

When clicking an item
These settings are only visible when "Classic RSS Feed" is selected as the RSS Activity Type.

This controls what happens when the end user clicks or presses on an item in the list.

Show RSS item content - Show the content contained within the RSS feed in the RSS content activity.

Open destination link in app - Open the link associated with the RSS item within the RSS content activity.

Open destination link in Android browser - Open the destination link, outside of the app, within the default Android browser.

Banner ads

These settings are only visible when "Classic RSS Feed" is selected as the RSS Activity Type.

This controls which banner ad networks will be permitted on this RSS feed's content page when banner ads are enabled for the app. This only affects the content page -- the ads shown on the list of RSS feed items will not be affected by this setting.

Photo Feed

Useful for image based feeds. By default items will be displayed as a grid of thumbnails. When the user clicks on one of the thumbnails they will be able to view the full sized image. You can control the interface style and what content is shown by selecting a different Item Style.

Show descriptions on photo?
This setting is only visible when "Photo Feed" is selected as the RSS Activity Type.

Whether or not to show the item's description on the photo content page.

Enable Set-picture-as?
This setting is only visible when "Photo Feed" is selected as the RSS Activity Type.

Whether or not the user has the ability to set the photo as their device’s wallpaper, contact photo, or any other available system dependent option.

Activity URL

The unique reference URL for this activity that can be used for linking to it. For an example of it's usage, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

What the RSS Activity Contains

The RSS Activity contains two activities. The first is a list of items in the feed. When you initially visit this activity it will be blank, and your Andromo app will query the feed and populate it with items. Each item will contain a title and a date the item was published. Most items will also show a short description, and some feed items will have icons associated with them (what you see on the index page depends upon what Item Style you select).

You can scroll through the list and select an item to read. When you click on a feed item you will be brought to the content activity. This activity will show you the title of the feed, the URL associated with the feed item, and the content of the feed item. Some feeds will publish all of the text, and other will only publish the first few sentences, it is up to the feed creator. From there the user will be able to click on the link and view the item in the default Android web browser.

Details

Location-Aware
This feature will let your users locate themselves on the map, show nearby locations, and get route or navigation directions. If enabled, a button will be shown allowing users to show their current location on the map (if available). Whenever the user selects a location marker, two links are provided on the information window below the description, "Show Route", and "Open Navigation". When "Show Route" is selected, a route is drawn from their current location to the selected location, along with informational markers that provide point-by-point directions. When "Open Navigation" is selected, the Google Navigation application is launched (if installed) to provide an alternate navigation interface. If for some reason these additional location-based features are not available, they will not be provided to the user.

When this feature is enabled, the app will request permission from the user to allow usage of location providers on the device such as GPS, cell tower, or WiFi access points when when installing the app.

Google Maps API Key

This is where you can enter your Google Maps Javascript API key to authorize your use of the Google Maps Javascript API.

If you do not enter an API key, your app will display a low-resolution map with a watermark on it as of June 11, 2018:

At that time, keyless calls to the Maps JavaScript API and Street View API will return low-resolution maps watermarked with “for development purposes only.” - Google product and pricing changes

Note: Beginning June 11, 2018, all Google Maps access needs to be authenticated, and Google Maps usage above certain thresholds are subject to fees from Google. You will need to enable billing in the Google Cloud Console (and register a credit card) In order to use Google Maps within your app. See here for pricing. Map views are subject to the limits for "Dynamic Maps." The use of map markers is subject to the limits for "Geolocation." If navigation is enabled, that is subject to the limits for "Directions."

Please be aware that map access is no longer a free service from Google. If you do not want to incur any fees, make sure you set appropriate daily quotas in the Google Cloud Console, or do not use the Map activity.

To generate an API key, you will need to select a project in the Google Cloud Console and create a Credential for it. The type of credential you need is an "API key."

See Setting up API keys in the Google Cloud Console Help documentation.

Once you've generated an API key, you may want to restrict access by adding one or more "HTTP referrers (websites)" application restrictions (one for each Andromo Map activity you use). You can also set an "API restriction" on the key to only enable it for the "Maps JavaScript API" if you wish.

HTTP Referrer

This is the value you can enter as an "HTTP referrer (websites) API key restriction" within the Google Cloud Console to help secure access to your Google Maps API Key. Although this is not required (the map will work without it), it is a good idea to help protect your API key access a little bit.

To enter this value in the Cloud console, navigate to your API key, and add the value to the list of "Application restrictions" by selecting the "HTTP referrers (websites)" option. (If you have multiple maps using the same API key, you will need to add the appropriate HTTP referrer path for each Andromo activity to the list.)

Note: only an "HTTP referrer" restriction will work. You cannot use an "Android apps" restriction at this time.

See: Best practices for securely using API keys in Google's Cloud Platform documentation.

Save Your Settings

Once you're finished entering the above information, click on the 'Save Changes' button to create your Map activity, and begin the process of adding locations to your map.

Location

Now that you've created your Map activity, the next step is to start adding points to your map that will be shown as markers. Each location marker contains the settings below.

Title
The main heading (in bold) for the information window that pops up when the user selects this location marker on your map. A good choice would be something like your company name. To prevent this text from wrapping, it's best to keep it shorter than approx. 45 characters in length. Aside from wrapping, you will also want to limit this text to approx. 80 characters.

Description
The description for the marker's information window that is shown underneath the Title. Usually this will be contact details such as the address and phone number. The information window will safely accommodate 2 lines of visible text of approx. 80 characters in length. Lengths beyond this will cause the "Show Route" and "Open Navigation" links to be cut off (if you have the Location-Aware feature enabled).

Tip: You can force the description to show on two lines by adding the HTML line break format code

at the end of your first line. e.g. My first line

My second line

Address
The full address of the location you want to add, such as '505 North Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA'. This information is used to find the latitude and longitude values for the location point. If you already know the latitude and longitude values, you can leave this field blank and enter the coordinates directly.

Latitude
If you know the latitude value for your address, enter it here (e.g. 41.8913202). Otherwise, leave this blank.

Longitude
If you know the longitude value for your address, enter it here (e.g. -87.6240515). Otherwise, leave this blank.

Locations

When you're finished entering the location's information, click on the 'Save Changes' button to finish adding the location to the map. After saving the location, you can verify that it is correct by looking at its location on the Map Preview. If it's incorrect, you can click the Edit button to change its location settings by providing a more accurate address or specific latitude/longitude values.

Address
The list of locations you've added to the activity. You can edit their settings or delete it using its corresponding Edit and Delete buttons.

Add Map Location
There's no limit to the amount of locations you can add. To add additional locations to the Map activity, click on the +Add Map Location button. Repeat this step for each new location you want to add.

Map Preview
A map preview containing the markers of the locations you've added so far to this activity.

Activity URL

The unique reference URL for this activity that can be used for linking to it. For an example of it's usage, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

NOTE: For best results, we recommend adding the following HTML 'meta' tag to the document 'head' of each of your HTML files:

<head> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, user-scalable=no" /></head>

You can find detailed information regarding this tag under Using Viewport Metadata in the Android Developers Guide.

Content can be as simple as a single HTML file, or a complex directory structure of files and related image resources. Once you've composed what you want to show, simply zip the content using your favorite zip utility and upload the resulting file.

Benefits

Does not require a web server to be hosting your web content.

Since the content is embedded in the application, it's only visible to the people using the application.

Content can be as simple as a single html page, or an index containing links to other pages, images etc.

It will be more responsive since the files will be loaded from the application on the device instead of having to be downloaded.

Drawbacks

This does require some basic knowledge of HTML content creation, and basic usage of a zip utility.

Since the files are built into the application, their content will not change after publishing the application. Therefore if any changes are required, the application would need to be published again.

Adding an HTML Archive Activity

To add an HTML Archive activity to your project: start editing your project and go to the Activities tab. Under 'Your App Activities' click the + Add an Activity button and select HTML Archive from the list.

Now let's take a look at the HTML Archive Activity settings.

Settings

The following settings are available for this activity.

Activity Name
The name that you want to give your activity. This will appear on the dashboard, toolbar, and navigation drawer. This can be whatever you want but should probably describe what you will be displaying.

Subtitle

Position
This is a relative index that controls the order of the activities in your application. The position will effect where your activity is displayed on the dashboard and navigation drawer.

When selected, this activity won't show on the dashboard or the navigation drawer. You can still access this activity from an HTML-based activity using it's Activity URL. For more information, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

Details

HTML Archive File
The .zip file containing your HTML file(s) and related assets. Click on the 'Browse' button to select the zip file (.zip) to upload.

NOTE: For best results, we recommend adding the following HTML 'meta' tag to the document 'head' of each of your HTML files:

<
head> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, user-scalable=no" /></head>

You can find detailed information regarding this tag under Using Viewport Metadata in the Android Developers Guide.

Creating the zip file requires that you have some type of zip utility installed on your system that creates a file with a .zip extension. When you're ready to upload, select all of the files and folders required for your HTML pages and add them to create a zip archive file. The first page to be shown is referred to as the HTML Index Page ( such as 'index.html'). It needs to be located in the root of the .zip file (not in a subfolder). In order for files to be referenced correctly, you must also ensure that each referenced file uses relative paths (relative to the root of the zip file i.e. where your HTML Index Page is located). There are many free zip programs available online as well as resources for creating HTML pages and websites.

For more detailed instructions, see the knowledge base article, How to Create an HTML Archive ZIP.

HTML Index Page
This is the name of the file in the root of the .zip file that you want to show when this activity is viewed. This file must be located in the root of the .zip file (not in a folder). A common name for such a file is 'index.html' (however can be named what you like).

For more detailed instructions, see the knowledge base article, How to Create an HTML Archive ZIP

You can enable this option if any of the pages need access to HTML5 Geolocation features. When this feature is enabled, the appropriate permissions will be added to the app requesting access to their location.

Open links in external browser
You can enable this option to open external links outside of the app, within the default browser.

Activity URL

The unique reference URL for this activity that can be used for linking to it. For an example of it's usage, refer to the topic Linking to Another Activity.

Linking to Another Activity

The HTML Archive activity also allows you to open another activity from a link using the special URL format:

andromo://<<internal-activity-identifier>>

Each activity contains an internal unique identifier that can be referenced for opening it. You can find each activity's reference URL in the the section labelled "Activity URL" located below the activity's Example Screenshot. Each activity's settings can be accessed from the "Activities" tab, by clicking the desired activity name or icon, or by selecting "Edit" from its Action drop-down list.. It will appear as a value such as:

where "gallery25491" is the internal identifier for that particular activity. This value will be different for each activity in your project.

As an HTML hyperlink, this would be formatted as:

<a href="andromo://gallery25491">Visit Our Photo Gallery</a>

If you'd like to open the dashboard, you can specify the following:

andromo://dashboard

As an HTML hyperlink, this would be formatted as:

<a href="andromo://dashboard">Go Home</a>

It's also possible to reference a sub-page in an HTML Archive activity from another HTML Archive or Custom Page. For example, if you have a page in your archive that is within a sub-folder, such as /pages/mypage.html, you could reference it as:

<a href="andromo://html15407/pages/mypage.html">Go to my sub-page</a>

where
andromo://html15407
references the activity, and
/pages/mypage.html
represents the page's path from the root of the archive.

Example

Below is how a finished activity would look given this sample .zip HTML archive.

What the Flickr Gallery Activity Contains

By default the Flickr Gallery Activity contains a scrollable grid of thumbnails which is populated when the app queries the feed. When the user clicks on one of the thumbnails, they will be able to view the full sized image and be able to swipe horizontally to see the next or previous photo. If you'd like something different than a grid, you can choose from a variety of different Item Styles for the index page.

The image view contains other features such as setting the wallpaper, sharing options, and the visibility of the description. Below are some examples of this activity:
